Gifts for Your Partner That Aren't Flowers or Chocolate — 10 Ideas by How Long You've Been Together

A good gift for a partner isn't measured in money but in what it says about the relationship. Ten ideas sorted by stage, from three months to ten years, plus the ones to avoid.

Framed watercolor portrait of a couple kissing — a gift for a partner

There's nothing wrong with flowers and chocolate. But they only say "I remembered the date." They don't say "I know you." And most people want the second one.

We've painted a lot of couples — anniversary gifts, birthdays, wedding presents — and the thing we hear most from customers isn't about how the painting looks. It's "they remembered the exact day this photo was taken." The best gifts for the person you love almost always have the two of you and a story inside them.

One rule: the gift has to prove you were listening

Before the list, think back over the last three months. What did your partner say they "want to try," "want to go to," or "want to have," in passing, and then never did? That is the best gift list you'll ever find, better than any article on the internet, including this one.

If nothing comes to mind at all, that's a sign this year's gift should be time, not a thing.

Under a year: light, but exactly right

1. The thing they mentioned once (200–1,000 THB)

The book by the author they named. Sweets from the shop they said they wanted to try. A record by the band they play most. Coffee from the roaster they talked about. None of it costs much, but the message is "I remember what you said," which early on is worth more than anything else.

Drawback: you have to remember correctly. Guess wrong and it backfires.

2. Tickets to do something together (500–3,000 THB)

A concert, an exhibition, a pottery workshop, a cooking class. Early in a relationship, experiences you share build the common memories that new couples don't have many of yet.

Drawback: choose what they like, not what you'd like to take them to.

3. Hold off on anything expensive

Serious jewellery, pricey gadgets, designer bags. This early, they make the other person uncomfortable, indebted, or pressured to match. Save them for later.

One to three years: experiences, and things you use together

4. A trip that's completely planned (3,000–20,000 THB)

Not "shall we go somewhere?" but "it's booked, this Friday, just pack clothes." The other person not having to think about anything is the gift itself, especially if they're usually the one planning for you.

Drawback: check their calendar carefully. A surprise trip that collides with something important is a disaster.

5. Something that upgrades their daily life (1,000–5,000 THB)

A good pillow if they complain about their neck. Noise-cancelling headphones if they take the train every day. A proper chair if they work from home. Not romantic on the day, but they'll think of you every day they use it, which is hundreds of days.

Drawback: this kind of gift has to be exactly right. Ask them outright. The surprise matters less than getting the right thing.

6. A painted portrait from a photo that means something to you both (790–1,900 THB)

This one is ours, so here is honestly who it suits and who it doesn't.

Couples who've been together a year or more start to have "that photo." The first trip. The day you got together. The crooked selfie you both love anyway. Painting it in watercolor, framing it, and writing the date and place underneath turns a picture on a phone into a one-of-one object you can keep in the room, and every glance at it brings that day back.

Three years and beyond, or married: things that last

7. Finish the thing you've been "getting round to" (0–10,000 THB)

Couples who've been together a long time have a list of things that keep getting postponed. The wedding album that never got made. The corner of the room you meant to sort out. The tree you said you'd plant. The gift is you finishing it, alone, without asking them to help.

Drawback: pick something they actually want finished, not something you want finished.

8. A night with no responsibilities (1,000–5,000 THB)

For couples with children, the best gift may be one night without the kids. Grandparents on duty, a hotel in town, dinner at the place you went before children, and sleeping until you wake up.

Drawback: you sort out the childcare completely. Don't leave that part to your partner.

9. Something that tells the whole story (2,000–10,000 THB)

A photo book from the first day to now. A map with a pin in every place you've been together. A box with the cinema tickets, boarding passes, and the receipt from the first dinner. These take a long time to make, and that's the gift.

Drawback: start weeks ahead. Half-finished, it looks worse than not doing it at all.

10. Support the thing they love that you've complained about (500–5,000 THB)

Every couple has something one person loves and the other finds annoying. The plants taking over the balcony, the sports gear cluttering the house, a collection of something. Buying something that supports it — a proper plant stand, a display cabinet — says "I accept who you are," which for a long-term couple means more than any bouquet.

Gifts to avoid, at any stage

  • Anything implying they should change. Exercise equipment, self-improvement books, anti-ageing cream, unless they asked.
  • Anything you want. The game you want to play, the kitchen gadget you want to use.
  • High-value gift cards. In a relationship, it reads as "I didn't know what to get you."
  • An expensive gift to make up for something. If it's been a rough year, spending won't fix it, and usually makes it worse.

Last thing

The best gift for your partner may be completely different each year. Headphones this year, a trip next year, a painting of the wedding photo the year after. The only thing they share is that they answer the question "what do you need this year?" correctly.

If you have a photo that means something to the two of you and want to know whether it would work as a painting, send it over. We'll tell you honestly which photos work and which to swap, no obligation.

Frequently asked

We haven't been together long. What should I give?
Under a year, keep it light but specific — something that proves you listen. The book by the author they mentioned, sweets from the shop they wanted to try, tickets to the film they've been waiting for. Anything expensive this early makes the other person uncomfortable rather than happy.
When is a couple portrait from a photo the right gift?
Anniversaries, birthdays, Valentine's, or as a wedding gift. It works best with a photo that means something to both of you — the proposal, the first trip. At CrafterCrew it starts at 790 THB with frame, with your names and a date under the artwork, and you see a draft within 24–36 hours.
My partner said not to get them anything. Should I anyway?
Yes, but keep it small. People who say that usually don't want you to go to trouble, but they still like being thought of. A handwritten card or a small thing tied to something they once said beats an expensive gift that makes them feel guilty.
